Every girl from Reception to Year 6 is involved in a full programme of sports activities. Netball, hockey, swimming, athletics, rounders, gymnastics and dance are all taught and the girls are encouraged to develop their individual capabilities in all sports. The generous allocation of curriculum time and use of first class facilities, help us to maintain an unrivalled reputation for excellence in sport.
We believe that all pupils who leave Highfield should have a good understanding of what it means to be healthy and what it means to lead a healthy active lifestyle.
The aim of good Physical Education is to develop the athletic potential of every young person, enabling elite performances and encouraging success and confidence for all. Our focus on the five areas below enables our pupils to do this within a safe and secure environment, where they can develop the confidence to express themselves.
Within lessons we encourage pupils in five different areas:
- Cognitive – Developing tactical and strategic thinkers.
- Social – Developing teamwork, communication and discipline.
- Creative – Developing creative thinkers.
- Physical – Developing psychomotor skills through activities such as fundamental skills, outwitting opponents, physical challenge and health related fitness.
- Healthy Active Lifestyle – Developing an understanding of all components of fitness and training methods.
Gym and dance are not forgotten and weekly lessons culminate in an impressive annual display of Sports Acro, gymnastic and dances. It is one of the highlights of the year for the girls in Year 3 to 6 as every girl is given a part to play.
On site there is a netball court, a climbing wall and an inside sports hall. We use the very best of the local facilities including The Magnet Leisure Centre and Bracknell Athletics Club, ensuring that the girls are exposed to first-class venues.
Matches and Competitions
There is a full programme of weekday fixtures that take place in each of the three terms against local schools, as well as in District, county and national tournaments, including competing in major IAPs competitions. Some girls have tasted success, winning national competitions, with some having gained county and national team placements.
We are proud to celebrate personal success stories of pupils competing at national level in a range of sports, including gymnastics, hockey and swimming. We have pupils who perform in dance and gymnastics shows out of school and many belong to and represent clubs at local, regional or county level.
“Words cannot begin to express how highly I regard Mrs Young and her team. Mrs Young has inspired a passion for sport in Emily that I believe will stay with her for the rest of her life. Mrs Young goes above and beyond to create opportunities for children of all abilities, who have both an interest in and the right attitude towards sport. This includes encouraging the girls to take part in activities outside of school. Highfield girls punch well above their weight and are often performing at regional and national level.” Mrs Roberts, 2016 Year 6 leaver parent
