Nursery & Reception

The Highfield Preparatory School Nursery and Reception Department has a long established reputation for excellence. At our last inspection the early years’ classes were graded excellent in all categories.

Our Nursery is very popular as it lays a foundation for the love of learning that all girls enjoy at Highfield.  This continues when they move into our Reception class, joining the Highfield Highway.

Fully qualified, caring teachers support the girls’ learning, with the addition of specialist Music, PE, Swimming and French teaching.

The girls in the Early Years are very much part of the whole school.  They join in as much as possible by coming to Achievers Assemblies and being awarded certificates, having lunch in the dining room and playing with the other girls in the Lower School.  The younger children really look up to the older girls and are encouraged to work together at every opportunity, so they can learn together.

The friendly, welcoming atmosphere of our early years’ classes ensures that children really enjoy their first taste of school. We understand that happy children learn effectively if they feel safe and secure, in a well-planned and exciting environment. We create classrooms where they feel free to explore, discover and try out new things.

For much of the time all children in Nursery and Reception classes are able to move from activities set up inside or outside as they wish. Their covered outside play areas allow them to enjoy playing in the fresh air all year round.

Learning through play

We believe that children learn through experiences and that it is our job to provide them with those learning opportunities every day they come to school. Children are encouraged to develop good social skills and to have respect for others. They are taught good manners and the difference between right and wrong. Their spiritual development is fostered in all activities including coming to school assemblies and joining in our cultural celebrations. Fully qualified, caring teachers support the children’s learning, with the addition of specialist music teaching in the nursery and ICT, PE and French in Reception.

Happy and Having Fun

We want our children to develop a positive sense of achievement and a strong sense of self-worth while having fun. This approach to learning through experiencing means that we provide activities that promote ‘hands on’ learning. For example, recreating real life situations to enable children to understand mathematical concepts.

Safe and Secure All Day Long

All the children in our early years classes are able to start early, from 7.45am in the morning at our breakfast club (Early Birds) and stay later and join our after school care club (The Den) until 6pm. In the holidays children may attend the Wise Owls Holiday Club which operates from our premises.

Every day is different and every day is exciting in Early Years at Highfield Prep. Nursery and Reception children play and learn through carefully chosen topics with ‘stunning starts’ and ‘fabulous finishes’. We love to get out and about, exploring our local environment and visiting places of interest further afield to develop our learning. Visitors are invited to school to talk to the children whenever it links with our theme.

Our Aims for our Nursery and Reception Classes

  • To provide a happy, safe and stimulating environment to enable children to learn how to work and play together
  • To ensure children feel safe and secure, valued and confident and are able to develop a sense of achievement through learning
  • To offer the children a broad range of experiences covering all types of learning both inside and outside
  • To use play based curriculum to teach the children
  • To put the needs, interests and aptitudes of the individual first
  • To provide opportunities for expression and creativity
  • To have happy, confident and interested children who love learning new things.

Our school is very popular and early entry into our nursery is the only guaranteed way of getting a place in our reception class.

Nursery Package

In this changing world we recognise that working parents need childcare that fits with their busy lives, but still provides the best possible start for their daughter, and that’s why we go that extra mile to support our Highfield Families.

For girls in the nursery we offer a free Breakfast club and free afterschool care in The Den for each full day they attend school. That means we can care for your daughter from 7.45am until 6pm.

Your daughter will receive a nutritional breakfast on arrival and a sandwich tea is served at 4.30pm as part of our afterschool club. This is in addition to the cooked lunch that she will receive when she attends a full day in Nursery.
